How to Re-Grip a Golf Club Like a Pro (Without Breaking a Sweat)
Let’s be real—re-gripping a club can be a pain. Whether you are a pro keeping your set fresh, or you are a golf enthusiast who wants some cool grips, re-gripping can be a challenge. The good news? You can easily re-grip your own clubs—and we’ll show you how to do it.
Take Mondays Off® introduces this guide that will walk you through how to re-grip a golf club, step by step, using our favorite club in the bag: our Take Mondays Off® Golf Grip Kit.
Why Re-Gripping Matters (More Than You Think)
Your grips are the only point of contact between you and your club. Worn or slippery grips mess with your feel, grip placement, and even your ability to square the clubface. Fresh grips = better shots. It’s science (and common sense).
Experts recommend re-gripping every 40 rounds or once a year—whichever comes first. If you’re sweating through summer rounds or live somewhere humid, you might want to do it more often.
What You’ll Need (Spoiler: We’ve Got You Covered)
To re-grip your golf clubs at home, you’ll need:
-
Golf grip tape (double-sided)
-
New grips
-
A hook blade or utility knife
-
A towel or rag
-
A tray or catch pan (for excess solvent)
Step-by-Step: How to Re-Grip a Golf Club
1. Remove the Old Grip
Secure the club (preferably in a vise using a rubber clamp if you have one), and using a hook blade or other sharp edge, carefully slice through the old grip and peel it off. Remove all the leftover tape as well. Be especially gentle with graphite shafts, as you risk slicing and damaging the shaft.
2. Apply New Grip Tape
Grab one of the tape strips from your kit. Apply it lengthwise on the shaft, smoothing out bubbles or wrinkles. Fold the excess over the end of the shaft to cover the butt.
3. Add the Solvent
Pour a generous amount of grip solvent into the new grip. Cover the open end with your thumb and shake it to coat the inside of the grip. Then, pour the excess over the taped shaft (use a tray to catch excess solvent).
4. Slide on the Grip
Now, quickly (and confidently!) slide the grip onto the shaft. It should glide on smoothly with the solvent. Align the logo or design how you want it, and let rest for 24 hours before use.
Troubleshooting: What If the Grip Gets Stuck?
If your grip stops halfway or sticks mid-installation, don’t panic. Here’s what to do:
-
DO NOT force it. That could stretch or tear the grip.
-
Twist gently while pushing—this can help loosen the internal friction.
-
Add more solvent inside the grip and on the tape.
-
If it’s a total loss, don’t worry—just cut it off and try again. That’s why kits come with extra.
Pro Tips for Re-Gripping Like a Legend
-
Want a thicker grip feel? Wrap an extra layer or two of grip tape onto the club before installing the grip.
-
Keep it straight. Use a sharpie line or alignment tool to make sure logos line up.
-
Do the whole set. Consistency across your clubs = more consistent play.
